Lawnmowers, Hotbuttered Corn, & Wrecks

Two weeks ago was the Door County fair so naturally we headed out to see what a Wisconsin fair had to offer. Never in my life did I imagine I would be attening a lawn mower race but on a hot, humid Saturday that's exactly where I found myself. First, this ones for my dad. (Look at the sticker on the back window.) It just reminded me of you Dad. I sure don't know why. This is the sign posted before you enter the stadium.
Not only do they race these contraptions, some of which sound as if they have a Harley motor strapped to them, they have national lawn mower race champions. We were told this type of racing is huge in the south. One racer traveled clear from TN to participate!

My dad is convinced the only reason Ryan went this year is so he could figure out how to build a machine himself and enter next year. The following picture just may prove Dad right.

Next we went to the Demolition Derby. This was another first for me and I loved it. I don't know about you but hockey is my favorite sport to watch. Why because you are almost guaranteed to see fighting and someone getting bloody. Pure action. Demolition derbys are kind of like the same thing, the whole point is to crash other people's cars. We had so much fun.

Right off the bat one guy got all mad because they had bashed his car. He jumps out of the window, pulls off his shirt, and starts mouthing off to the other cars. Needless to say the next go around all the other cars ganged up on him and he was the first one out. Good times!
Lastley, we watched the trailer races. The winner had to still have their traler attached and be the fastest one to go around the track ten times. Most of the "decor" they had on the trailers fell off quickly, namely a boat and a lawn mower. The boat caused one car to flip over.

Fair food in Wisconsin is any dairy product (namely milk & icecream), brats, brat burgers, and hot buttered corn. The corn was my favorite part. Here they are pulling it out of the boiling pot.
For such an agricultural based state we were shocked at how few livestock & horticulture entries there were. I was suprised to find that our fair back home is much larger with a lot more enteries than the one here. That being said we did see A LOT of cows and one breed in particular I've never even heard of. The grand champion had a very amusing name of "T-bone."

  1. Wow what a trip! I've always wanted to go to a demo derby. Looks like a lot of fun! How was Ashley's wedding?

  2. I'm thinking the Wisconsin fair kicks the butt of the Lane county fair. (You didn't happen to take home a big stuffed animal, did you?) And um, you seem to have forgotten the belly shots and house shots. Could you please get on that? Oh, and what am I going to do with my new boots? I'm going to wear them, of course! They were already a hit on Sunday. Everybody wanted to be me. (Well, atleast Samantha Barkley did, anyway... :) )
